RCMP say Elijah Albert, who was arrested earlier Thursday, shot and injured an RCMP officer in a home in Muskowekwan First Nation, about 140 kilometres northwest from Regina.

Officers from Punnichy RCMP were responding to a report of an armed individual at around 2 a.m.

"As officers arrived at the scene, a firearm was discharged, and an officer was struck," RCMP said in a release.

Albert then fled the scene, prompting RCMP to issue a dangerous person alert for Muskowekwan First Nation and surrounding area at 6:36 a.m.

The RCMP say the officer was transported to hospital by EMS with "non-life threatening" injuries.

No other injuries were reported and there were no other occupants in the home where the officer was shot, according to the release.

Police say the Saskatchewan RCMP's Critical Incident Response Team found Albert in a rural area nearby, close to Lestock, Sask.

Albert was taken into custody at approximately 8:50 a.m., at which time the dangerous alert was lifted, the RCMP said.

Police had previous warned the public that Albert was armed with a rifle.

Saskatchewan RCMP's Provincial General Investigation Section is now in charge of the ongoing investigation and "charges have not been laid at this time," according to the release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP.
