Regina police say they shot and injured an "aggressive" dog while responding to a house fire early Monday morning.

The injured dog will likely need to be euthanized.

Police were initially dispatched to 708 Cameron Street in response to the fire.

When two officers arrived in the alley at the back of the house they found a bleeding man. They helped him up and told him to go to the alley while the officers continued to toward the burning building.

That's when police said they encountered a large aggressive dog circling the police vehicle.

The officers called for animal control to attend and then turned their attention to the front of the house, believing other people to be inside.

Soon after officers learned two adults and two children had left the house. When they returned to check on the injured man, who had jumped through a window to escape the fire, they encountered the dog, which also lived at that residence.

When the officers tried to enter the vehicle to assist the injured man, the dog charged at one of the officer, who fired two shots, hitting the dog once.

Animal Control recovered the animal a short time later and took it for surgery, though it is expected the dog will be euthanized.

Rescue crews went through the house, but didn't find anyone inside. It is unclear how many people were in the house when the fire started, however everyone is believed to have gotten out safely.

The investigation is ongoing.
