Six people were taken to hospital — including a child and a young adult in critical condition — after a fire tore through a home in Regina's Rosemont neighbourhood Wednesday morning.

Fire crews responded just after 8:19 a.m. to reports of a fully involved house fire on Rosemont Crescent.

"Our firefighters encountered fire coming from the first and second floors, as well as multiple occupants outside the home," said Gord Hewitt, a deputy chief with Regina Fire & Protective Services.

"Our crews treated several people on scene for smoke inhalation and burns, made entry to contain and control the fire, and searched the property."

Hewitt says all six occupants were taken to hospital by emergency medical services. Four were taken as a precaution for smoke inhalation, while two — a young adult and a child — suffered serious burns and were listed in critical but stable condition.

Firefighters also found two dogs inside the home, both of which died in the fire.

Neighbour Cherish Pelletier said she saw the fire spread quickly through the home.

"It started off in the living room, and then it got more intense and it started to rise up into the bedrooms in the top floor," she said. "And then you could hear the windows shattering and exploding from the fire being so intense."

Pelletier described seeing people outside the home with soot on their skin, visibly distressed.

"It was all over, and everybody was crying."

Fire investigators remained on the scene Wednesday morning working to determine the cause of the fire. No official cause has been released.
