A prominent Regina lawyer has been suspended for "conduct unbecoming" a lawyer.

The Law Society of Saskatchewan says Tony Merchant was previously found guilty of breaching a court order and advising a client to do so as well. The infractions date back to 2003.

On Wednesday, Merchant was suspended from practising law for three months, starting June 30.

Merchant — who is well known in law circles for his work with former residential school students and as well for numerous class action lawsuits — also has to pay $28,869.30 to cover the costs of his hearing.

The Law Society says Merchant is appealing the sentence.
