Regina woman 1 of 35,000 to sign petition to stop resettlement of Syrian refugees
Kerri Bozsik says she wants more information on how the government will ensure security
Kerri Bozsik says she signed a petition named "Stop resettling 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada" because she wants the government to ensure there are proper security checks before accepting 25,000 refugees by Dec. 31.
The petition, which has been circulating widely online, had gathered more than 35,000 signatures by Tuesday afternoon. The petition makes claims that have not been proven as fact, nor have been reported by CBC.
Bozsik, who lives in Regina, said she doesn't agree with all the wording of the petition, but signed it as a message to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She said since the attacks in Paris, the prime minister's plan to bring 25,000 refugees has made her panic.
"Is that a promise that he made for the campaign that he's trying to fulfil now?" she asked.
Bozsik said she feels she hasn't received enough information from the government on the security procedures, and whether they can be met while accepting a large number of refugees in a short time.
"You can bring in 25, you can bring in over 100,000, that's not my issue," she said. "My issue is are we doing the proper security checks, to ensure that, you know, there's not some unfavourable individuals coming over."
Bozsik said if the proper security checks were met, she would be happy to accept the refugees by Dec. 31.
