Sask. campers to get more Wi-Fi in parks

Saskatchewan officials hope to roll out more Wi-Fi hotspots for campsites within provincial parks.

Saskatchewan officials hope to roll out more Wi-Fi hotspots for campsites within provincial parks.

"Folks … are just wanting to stay connected," Mary-Anne Wihak, the head of visitor services for Saskatchewan parks, said Tuesday. "We are a connected society and I think we just need to acknowledge that that is what people are asking for."

Wihak said it is not unusual for people looking for a wilderness experience to enjoy modern services.

"They still manage to get out and about in the parks and enjoy the outdoor experience but want to have that service available when they get back to their camper," she said.

In Saskatchewan, only Cypress Hills Inter-Provincial Park, a shared park with Alberta, has wireless internet capability.

Wihak said service should be installed at Moose Mountain Provincial Park by the summer of 2011.

Adding Wi-Fi to more locations is under consideration, she says.

"We in Saskatchewan certainly are looking towards that in the future."

Wihak said some provincial parks are in remote locations, making installation of the necessary infrastructure a challenge.
