Saskatchewan turns up the heat: Records broken, weather warnings issued

Environment Canada has issued a number of heat warnings in Saskatchewan, with temperatures expected to reach up to 36 C.

Residents in the southwest corner of Saskatchewan can expect extremely hot weather this week.

Environment Canada issued heat warnings for: 

  • Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Coronach, Leader, Gull Lake.
  • Swift Current, Herbert, Cabri, Kyle  Lucky Lake.
  • Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Val Marie, Cypress Hills.
  • Lloydminster.
  • Leader, Gull Lake.

Southwestern Saskatchewan temperatures are expected to climb to 32-34 degrees C on Sunday, but should dip to around 18-22 C on Sunday night.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the 33-36 C range on Monday.

There might be a little relief on Tuesday, with temperatures projected to be below the heat warning criteria, with highs around 24-28 C.

Heat warnings are issued by Environment Canada when high temperature or humidity conditions may increase the risk of heat illnesses like heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

During heat warnings, Environment Canada recommends residents:

  • Drink plenty of water and stay in a cool place.
  • Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.
  • Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

According to Environment Canada, a number of places in Saskatchewan surpassed their all-time high temperatures on Saturday. 

The following locations set new record-high temperatures July 8 (in degrees Celsius):

  • Assiniboia- 36.6. The old record of 36.0 was set in 1983.
  • Coronach- 38.2. The old record of 37.0 was set in 1989.
  • Rockglen- 37.3. The old record of 32.3 was set in 2001.
  • Val Marie- 38.5. The old record of 37.5 was set in 1983.

Mankota reached a high of 37.8 which was just shy of their old record of 38.0 set in 1983.
