New information is detailed in a Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) news release on the recent Regina Police Service (RPS) in-custody death.

SIRT is the provincial police watchdog that investigates various incidents, including but not limited to, when someone dies in police custody.

On Monday, a 23-year-old man turned himself into RPS. SIRT, says it was in relation to warrants he had from another police service.

Around noon he was booked into a cell.

Then on Tuesday morning at approximately 3:45 a.m. CST, he was found unresponsive and EMS was contacted.

The release then says police and paramedics provided first aid and the man was taken to the Regina General Hospital in critical condition.

Multiple packages with unknown contents were removed from his body while in the hospital, the release said.

At about 4:49 p.m. CST that same day, the man was declared dead.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is involved in the investigation now, including a post-mortem examination, toxicology and microscopy.

SIRT says they will continue to investigate this incident and a final report will be made public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
