Brian Towriss resigns as Huskies football head coach
After 33 years, he had national record of 196 wins by a football coach
Brian Towriss is stepping down as head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team after a 33-year career.
The university announced his resignation in a news release on Monday.
Known as "BT," the 60-year-old holds the national record of 196 wins by a football coach. He has also coached the most games in university sport, having led the team through 315 games.
'Honesty, respect and hard work'
After four years as an assistant coach, Towriss took over from Val Schneider as head coach in 1984.
'He is the consummate professional, the ultimate team player."- Basil Hughton, Huskie Athletics director
He said in a statement on Monday that coaching the Huskies had been a fulfilling and wonderful career.
"I have also had the pleasure of working with a loyal group of coaches and support staff that have shared my vision and passion for the program for a long time," said Towriss.
"I am proud to say that we won a lot of football games and we did it with honesty, respect and hard work."
Huskies 'legend'
In 2007, Towriss received an Order of Merit from the Government of Saskatchewan.
Athletics director Basil Hughton, who will retire in June, described Towriss as a legend.
"I truly believe that it is fitting to describe BT and his accomplishments as one," said Hughton.
"He is the consummate professional, the ultimate team player and a well-respected voice around our Huskie coaches table."
The university said it would start looking for a new coach immediately. It said an interim coach would be named in the new year.
