Inquest into death of Saskatoon Correctional Centre inmate begins today

An inquest into the death of Gerald Burnouf will begin today and is scheduled to run until June 1.
Burnouf, 49, was found unresponsive in his cell while in custody at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre in October 2016. He was later pronounced dead.
Coroner Neil Robertson will preside at the inquest at the Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatoon.
The Coroner's Act mandates that an inquest be held in the event of an inmate dying while in custody when natural causes or preventable circumstances can be ruled out.
An inquest is meant to established the facts around the death and determine what recommendations could be implemented to prevent similar circumstances in the future.
