Jurors at a coroner's inquest in Saskatoon are hearing how a 17-year-old who fatally overdosed while in custody at the Kilburn Hall Youth Centre two years ago likely smuggled methamphetamine into the centre.

The 17-year-old boy cannot be named because of provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Kory Ochitwa is the Saskatoon police major crimes officer who led the investigation.

He says the autopsy results showed that the teen died of a methamphetamine overdose.

The teen had been arrested on July 25, 2015 for allegedly breaching a community supervision order. Ochitwa interviewed the teen's brother and two other young men the 17-year-old encountered at the provincial courthouse.

"His brother believed that (the teen) had bought methamphetamine and hid it in a body cavity prior to his arrest," Ochitwa said.

The two other men said they had encountered the teen at provincial court while in cells on July 29 and that he shared methamphetamine that he'd hidden in his body.

Ochitwa said that a close review of video footage taken from the police station, court cells and Kilburn Hall showed the teen apparently snorting or swallowing drugs while in custody.

The inquest is scheduled to run this week.

There are 15 witnesses.
