Parks in Saskatoon will be in for a free theatrical treat during the month of July.

Sum Theatre will perform Little Badger and the Fire Spirit outdoors in 25 parks around the city from July 4- 29.

Joseph Naytowhow is an actor in the musical adaptation of the story originally written by Maria Campbell.

"We created some of the songs as little contemporary pieces with our English and Cree," said Naytowhow. "Maria was very, you know, concerned that the Cree language be included. So a lot of songs, a lot of the lines some of the actors have to say, have Cree words — they're being used throughout the play."

He explained that the story was written from several tales told by Elders from Edmonton. Its protagonist, Little Badger, is a blind boy on a quest to bring fire back to his people.

"A lot of times we, as human beings, are blind and innocent, but often the answers to our questions are right in front of our nose," said Naytowhow.
