Saskatoon police say a male pit bull was badly injured after it he was dragged behind a minivan Sunday night.

Witnesses saw the dark-coloured minivan travelling westbound near Lenore Drive and Silverwood Road.

People tried to stop the vehicle when the leash broke, freeing the dog.

The van drove off, and was last seen travelling north on Wanuskewin Road.

The dog lost a considerable amount of skin and is undergoing surgery at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. The SPCA said his condition has improved, although he is terrified of humans. A long recovery process is expected.

Police said the dog's leash was attached to the rear trailer hitch of the van. They're asking anyone with a clearer description of the van to contact them.

Eyewitnesses saw a white man and woman seated inside the van.

The dog is a large grey and beige pit bull. His age is estimated between three and five years old.

Anyone with information about the dog's owner is also asked to call police or the SPCA.
