Sakimay First Nation Chief Lynn Acoose says she has lost faith in the AFN
Sakimay First Nation Chief Lynn Acoose has decided not to take part in today's vote for a new national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
Acoose said she doesn't think the AFN needs a national chief. She said she has lost faith in the assembly's ability to effectively advocate for First Nations.
The chief said she will continue to press for change. She would like to see a confederacy of nations, where the federal government deals directly with those representing treaty areas.
Perry Bellegarde, chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Ghislain Picard, former interim AFN national chief, and Leon Jourdain, former Treaty 3 chief are all vying for the position of national chief.
