Key Lake, Sask. coldest place in Canada this morning
Many parts of central Sask. were under extreme cold weather warning
Key Lake, Sask. held the dubious honour of coldest place in the country on Tuesday, according to Environment Canada.
The northern Saskatchewan community was sitting at a bone-chilling -38 C before the wind chill.
Saskatoon came in second place at a relatively balmy -35.3 C. Add in the wind chill, and it felt like -41.
At one point on Tuesday morning, Saskatoon and Key Lake were tied before the temperature dropped a few more degrees in Key Lake.
All extreme cold warnings were lifted just after 11 a.m. CST.
People are advised to take precautions with such cold temperatures, and to dress appropriately for the weather. Frostbite on exposed skin is possible within 10 minutes.
The blast of cold weather is attributed to an arctic ridge of high pressure building into southern Saskatchewan.
As a result of the cold, tow trucks and taxicabs were especially busy in Saskatoon. Waits for cabs were between 20 to 45 minutes, and the wait for a tow truck was 30 minutes to an hour.
There is some relief on the horizon. Saskatoon is expected to get up to a sunny -23 C this afternoon, with a high of - 19 C Wednesday.
Regina's expected high today is -21 C.
