Semi driver charged in fatal Saskatoon collision

A 28-year-old man is charged with dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death in relation to an October 2022 crash at Diefenbaker Drive and 22nd Street West.

A semi truck driver is facing criminal charges, eight months after a fatal crash in Saskatoon.

The 28-year-old man is charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of criminal negligence causing death in relation to the Oct. 7, 2022, crash at the intersection of Diefenbaker Drive and 22nd Street West.

He was allegedly driving a semi with two loaded trailers when it collided with an SUV. Both occupants of the SUV, a 59-year-old man and 60-year-old woman, were taken to hospital, but died. The semi truck driver was not injured, according to police.

The Saskatoon Fire Department arrived five minutes after the crash and found the two people trapped inside the SUV's front seats. Firefighters pried open the passenger door to get the woman out, but they had to use hydraulic tools to get into the driver's side. 

The semi driver is scheduled to appear in court on June 27.
