An unknown white powder that caused a stir in Saskatoon on Thursday turned out to be harmless.

Saskatoon police and firefighters were called to the Canada Post distribution centre on Avenue H Thursday morning after a small amount of the powder escaped from a package.

An employee was examined by a medical team and traffic restrictions were put in place while the Saskatoon fire department removed the package from the building for testing.

Further testing showed the substance to be 1-chloro-3-pentanone, which is used in the manufacturing of cosmetics.

The fire department says the package has been returned to Canada Post.

Traffic was restricted on Avenue H between 21st Street and 22nd Street as the Saskatoon police and the fire department investigated a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder. (Don Somers/CBC)
