It was a big weekend for the athletics program at the University of Saskatchewan.

On Friday night, the U of S Huskies women's basketball team beat the Alberta Pandas by 62-51, taking the Canada West finals.

"We had a good first half," said head coach Lisa Thomaidis in a news release.

"Our offence really sputtered in the second but thankfully our defence held it together for us."

Canada West All-Stars Sabine Dukate and Summer Masikewich led the game for the Huskies with 17 points each.

The team is now headed to the U SPORTS National Championships in Ottawa, Ont. from March 5 to 8 and have been announced as favourites to win.

Men's hockey

The next night proved just as successful for the university's men's hockey program.

On Saturday, the Huskies beat the UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 at Merlis Belsher Place, taking the Canada West Final.

"It was pretty special to win at home," said Huskies head coach Dave Adolph in a release. "I think the players really appreciate it."

The hockey team last won the Canada West final in 2016.

Fifth-year forward Levi Cable scored two goals, while former Everett Silvertip standout Carson Stadnyk scored his third goal in the past three games.

The Huskies are now turning their attention to the University Cup being held in Halifax. The tournament runs March 12 to 15.
