A 37-year-old man charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement was the subject of a police stand off in Saskatoon in 2014.

RCMP reported Joseph Yaremko had a 'violent past' after escape from psychiatric prison and stand off in 2014

Saskatoon police say a woman contacted them on Tuesday, alleging a man who attacked her the previous day was still in her apartment. One man was arrested. (CBC)

A man accused of confining and sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in Saskatoon has a history with law enforcement in Saskatchewan.

Police received a call on Tuesday that a woman had been held against her will and had been sexually assaulted over a period of roughly 10 hours in a Stonebridge apartment.

Joseph Yaremko, who has charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement, appeared in provincial court to answer to the charges Thursday morning. He was arrested at the apartment by police without incident.

Yaremko has a history with police in Saskatchewan, as in 2014 he was involved in a stand-off with Saskatoon police in the 2100 block of Seventh Street E. after he escaped custody from a psychiatric prison facility near North Battleford.

RCMP then described Yaremko as someone who was "unstable" with a violent past.

It was roughly 5 p.m. CST on Monday when Yaremko is alleged to have forcefully entered the apartment after knocking on the door and asking to use the phone.

Police say the man forced his way into the apartment when the woman refused, where he allegedly sexually assaulted the woman and threatened her if she attempted to leave.

She was able to leave the apartment the next morning, at which time she contacted police to report the incident.

It's believed the man and the woman are not known to each other.

Yaremko has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 13.
