Short Film Face Off announces films for Season 18

Short Film Face Off is excited to announce the nine films from across Canada that will appear on its 18th season.

Short Film Face Off is excited to announce the nine films in competition on this year's show — the 18th season.


"Every year the films we receive are more creative and skillfully done" said producer Bill Niven.  "It is a mark of how many young people in Canada are passionate about filmmaking and telling their own stories."

And this season's films are:

Desync by Minerva Navasca  (from Oakville, ON)
A young Filipina filmmaker attempts to overwrite a painful memory of her mother with a perfect narrative. 

The Difference Between Us by Dabi Anele (from Winnipeg, MB)
A young woman's unexpected pregnancy unveils the silent fractures in her relationship, compelling her to face the differences that have shadowed her relationship.

Flimsy by Kathleen Dorian (from Dartmouth, NS)
Fiona loses an estranged friend, and everything in her world begins to turn into paper. 

Poster Child by Brianna Russell  (from Clarke's Beach, NL)
An insecure young pianist fights to replace her childhood idol at the most prestigious orchestra in the country. 

The Prophetess by Edson Sithole (from Vancouver, BC)
An Afro-Canadian boy navigates the conflict between his father's mystical African heritage and his secular Canadian upbringing 

The Rug by Sean Cisterna (from Richmond Hill, ON)
Edna, a senior aged woman discovers that a discarded throw rug she found will digest anything left under it. The more it digests, the more it wants!

The Seas Between Us by Faisal Lutchmedial (from Toronto, ON)
In the mid 1960s a young girl who has never seen anything but rural Trinidad has her eyes opened to the world when her adventurous Auntie from India comes to visit.

Sounds of Glass by Morgan Abele (from Vancouver, BC)
Enna manages a store where bottled sounds are sold to customers who wish to relive lost pieces of their lives. When her organized storefront comes crashing down, Enna must confront the memory of losing her best friend.

Wet Noodle by Julia Lalonde (from York, ON)
13-year-old Evelyn longs for the attention of her class crush. When she notices his fascination with their female teacher's bouncing chest, she determines that boobs are the key to his heart.

All nine of the films are eligible to win the Telefilm Canada Short Film Face Off Award with a cash prize toward the filmmaker's next project.


The viewing public chooses the winner by an on-line vote.  

Writer/Producer Amanda Parris will be back as host.

Panelists include Eli Glasner, Magali Simard and Mohit Rajhans.

Broadcast dates on CBC TV and CBC Gem are Aug. 30, Sept. 6, 13 and 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
