$10M donation — and new name — for Laurentian's School of Architecture
School to be named after donor, former CEO of Goldcorp, Inc., Robert McEwen
The Laurentian School of Architecture will have a $10 million donation to help finish its second phase of construction, and a new name to go along with it.
Former Goldcorp CEO Robert McEwen made the donation to the school after a recent tour of the facility, where he was impressed by the ingenuity staff and students showed.
McEwen felt they embodied the creative ethic he and his wife have always encouraged in their own projects.
Time to shake up the world of architecture
"I think it will shake up the world of architecture," McEwen said, "[the idea of] bringing together the three cultures that founded our nation."
McEwen said he wasn't moved by just the students' and staff's creative excitement, but by the economic possibilities this type of thinking could one day produce.
"That amalgam of viewpoints and perspectives will produce hybrid products," he said. "We don't have to be confined to Canada, we can go right around the world."
