Early childhood education students at Cambrian College collected more than 4,000 books from the community to distribute to food banks around the city.

It's part of the college's Share a Book campaign, which was organized in partnership with the Child & Community Resources charity and the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

Cambrian College instructor Emily Matheson said many people in the community use food banks.

"And this is such a great way, not only to support the children but the families, to encourage them to read."

The donated books benefit families and gives them a chance to spend time together and learn.

"You're also giving them the opportunity for these children to build a better vocabulary, further their language skills, and helping them to gain knowledge about the world around them."

Salvation Army is one of the agencies that will be receiving books through the program.

Families are often glad to see a shelf of books available, said intake worker Patricia Bulloch.

"For some of them, they said it's really helpful because they can't afford the cable and the different options. So it's really nice to have something that they can do with their kids," she said.

The books were collected at library branches throughout the city during the campaign, which ran from Jan. 27 to Feb. 27.
