Copper Cliff fire hall, David St. plant get 'protected' status
Sudbury city staff looking for buildings to add to heritage register
Sudbury city councillors voted Monday night to protect two century-old city owned buildings from the wrecking ball.
The Copper Cliff fire hall and the David Street water treatment plant will now be "listed,” which means any plans for demolition would automatically be delayed for 60 days.
“Listing” a building is a step below a building being designated as heritage, which restricts any changes or demolition.
Greater Sudbury has only seven designated buildings, while Sault Ste. Marie has 36.
"I think there's a feeling that we started this about 40 years too late,” said Sudbury Coun. Dave Kilgour.
“Because there were a number of buildings that were taken down for one reason or another that would have been really nice to see in the landscape."
City staff say they are actively looking for buildings in Greater Sudbury to add to the heritage register.
