Province offers troubled northern Ontario town $300K to get through financial crisis
Fauquier-Strickland council will vote on the proposal during a special meeting Thursday
The provincial government is offering a northern Ontario town $300,000 in interim funding, so it doesn't shut down services and lay off staff at the end of the week.
The Township of Fauquier-Strickland, on Highway 11 not far from Kapuskasing, announced this month that it is out of money and without provincial intervention, would have to start closing down services by Aug. 1.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing is offering Fauquier one-time interim funding to keep services running and keep municipal staff on the job.
But if council votes yes to the proposal at a public meeting scheduled for Thursday night, it also comes with some conditions.
The ministry would require Fauquier-Strickland to pass a budget by the end of August, start collecting property taxes by the end of September, put a freeze on discretionary spending and provide regular financial reports to the province.
