The city of Sudbury is buying a specially designed wheelchair so people can navigate the main beach at Bell Park next summer.

The Mobi wheelchair has fat, balloon-like tires to go across sand, floats and reclines in the water.

But “people will still require assistance in helping them make the transfer to the chair,” city recreation co-ordinator Lori Henri said.

The city will also renovate a change room where people can put on their suits

The chair, which will cost between $1,000 and $1,500, is expected to be ready for next spring.

Henri said there is currently an existing ramp that takes wheelchairs across the sand to the water's edge.
