Goldcorp has announced it will permanently stop mining at its underground Dome mine, located near Timmins, Ont., as of this summer.

The move affects 115 Goldcorp employees and 76 contractors.

The mine has been a prolific gold producer, the company said on its website. The deposit was discovered in 1909 and went into production a year later, spanning more than 100 years of production.

The underground operation was halted in 2004 and put on what the mining industry calls "care and maintenance" in 2004, but resumed operation in early 2006.

Goldcorp management says they'll work with the unions to close the site safely and in accordance with the collective agreement. Outplacement services will be made available to affected employees.
