A 35-year-old man arrested in North Bay for living off the avails of prostitution has now been charged with human trafficking.

Ted Whittle of the North Bay police said they arrested and charged the Montreal man at a local hotel on Monday, after a "woman complained to the people at the desk of the hotel that she was being held against her will."

The man stands accused of forcing the woman to sell sex around Ontario and was charged with living off the avails of prostitution. As of Friday, he now faces a charge of trafficking in persons.

Whittle said it's a rare offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

No details have been released about the victim.
