Much of northern Ontario will see heavy snowfall on Friday.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for the areas around North Bay, Greater Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Temiskaming Shores, West Nipissing, Gogama, Espanola, Elliott Lake, Manitoulin Island, Wawa, Chapleau, Searchmont, Blind River and Thessalon, calling for up to 15 centimetres of snow and snowfall rates of up to two to four centimetres per hour.

A low-pressure system called an Alberta clipper is behind the snowfall, the weather office said.

Several highways in the northeast have been closed, including highway 17 between Blind River and Sault Ste. Marie, Highway 17 from Goulas River to Wawa.

Areas affected will include North Bay, Greater Sudbury, Espanola and Gogama, but the snow should taper to flurries overnight.

In addition to the snowfall warnings, the weather office has issued a winter weather travel advisory for the Kirkland Lake area.  It's calling for total snowfall of up to 10 cm. and reduced visibility.

It has also issued an extreme cold warning for Waskaganish, saying wind chill values could reach –38 C and –43 C.
