Sudbury council endorses 4 big projects
Sudbury city council is shortlisting four big civic projects.
Councillors gave the nod to a combined art gallery and main library, an arena and events centre, a complex for French arts and culture, and a multi-use space and conference centre.
The four were endorsed on Tuesday night and chosen from a list of 16 possibilities.
Two arena proposals from private developers are being considered for the events centre, and council will choose a location once it gets more information from staff.
Coun. Joscelyne Landry-Altmann says she's looking forward to those reports.
"If I know that in 10 years what we're investing today is going to be paid off or will have some sort of benefit — whether social, environmental, whatever — then that facilitates a better decision."
Council hasn't allocated funding to any of the projects yet.
Mayor Brian Bigger said financing options will be considered once staff report back to council.
"We see a vision for our city to move all four of these projects forward. What we need is more details."
Bigger said the city could fund the projects through support from other levels of government or the private sector.
Bigger said the proposals that weren't endorsed by council could still be considered down the road.
