Sudbury residents report overly offensive odors from landfill

Neighbours near the east Sudbury landfill are complaining about the strong smells this season.

The landfill site collects all kind of refuse, including leaf and yard waste as well as organics from the green bin program.

Residents say that on a windy day the smell becomes quite strong and has been particularly bad lately.

"It’s the heat. Sometimes rain will create more liquids and that can cause odors, and it’s depends on the year," said Chantal Mathieu, director of environmental services for the city.

Mathieu says the city is doing what it can to keep the smell down but in order to pinpoint the source at the dump it is advised that residents report the date and time they notice the odor.
