There are many fundraising runs for cancer, but the Northern Cancer Foundation is holding its own run/walk fundraiser this spring. Tannys Laughren, Executive Director of the Northern Cancer Foundation, told us why the centre wants its own event.

There are several similar cancer research fundraisers already, such as Run for the Cure.

But the executive director of the Northern Cancer Foundation said the money from the new event will stay local, and support cancer care at Health Sciences North.

“When we started looking around at all of the walks and runs, all of which are raising funds for great causes, not one of them was raising money for our cancer centre,” Tannys Laughren said.

“And we had people who were taking part in other walks who were saying I want my money to stay local. I want my money to stay at my cancer centre.”

The first annual Cancer Centre Run is planned for June 14 in Sudbury's Bell Park.

Laughren added most donations from existing fundraisers go to national cancer research.

“They are doing great work nationally, that's not the issue,” she said.

“But in terms of supporting the cancer centre, very few of those dollars come back to the cancer centre.”
