Sudbury transit drivers don't want protective barriers

Greater Sudbury Transit has decided against putting up plexi-glass barriers to protect bus drivers — one of the options that came out of a series of assaults on transit drivers last year.

Transit director Roger Sauve said a sample barrier was brought in for all drivers to see, but they weren't impressed.

"There was a high percentage of operators who did not want the barrier. They felt it reduced the experience for the customer and operator in interaction."

Sauve said new research on transit safety has been suggesting against barriers as well.

Security cameras have been installed on all city buses.

Sauve noted a working group on keeping Sudbury transit drivers safe is exploring other possibilities.
