Biting dog case leads to new charges

A second court date in December has been set in connection with an incident in which a dog attacked an 11-year-old boy

Thunder Bay's licensing and enforcement division says a court date in December has been set for the owner of a dog that attacked an 11-year-old boy in Thunder Bay.

56-year-old Frank Vantroba will appear in Provincial Offences Court Dec. 19.

Licensing and Enforcement  has filed charges against him under the Dog Owner's Liability Act. Manager Ron Bourret says Vantroba is charged with failing to have four dogs--two adults and two pups-- licensed and leashed.  Bourret's office is asking the court to order that the dog involved in the biting incident, a boxer, be destroyed. It is also requesting that the owner be fined.

Earlier this week, Thunder Bay police laid a charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. A court appearance on that charge is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Dante Mekanak, the child who was injured in the Nov. 17 incident at Tarbutt Park, suffered bite wounds requiring 65 stitches.
