Fort Frances, Ont., man charged with 2nd-degree murder in missing person investigation
Charges also include indignity to dead body, failure to comply with release order
A Fort Frances, Ont., man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with a missing person investigation.
The Fort Frances Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment says police responded to a report of a missing 41-year-old man from Rainy River First Nation on Thursday.
On Saturday, the man was found dead at a residence on Fifth Street West in the northwestern Ontario town.
A post-mortem is being conducted at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto, police said in a news release Sunday evening.
As a result of the investigation, a 53-year-old man from Fort Frances has been arrested and charged with:
- Second-degree murder.
- Indignity to a dead body.
- Failure to comply with a release order.
The accused has been remanded into custody and is expected to appear in court in Fort Frances on Wednesday.
About 7,400 people live in Fort Frances, which borders Minnesota.
"There is no threat to public safety. Residents can continue to expect a police presence in the area for the investigation," the Fort Frances OPP said.
The investigation is being led by the OPP North West Region Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. The Office of the Chief Coroner, Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and OPP Forensic Identification Services are also involved.
