Thunder Bay police say early Wednesday morning was a bad period for impaired drivers, after two separate crashes resulted in two men being arrested.

Shortly after midnight, officers responded to a report that a pickup truck had crashed on the road entering Lakehead University just west of Balmoral Street, police said.

When they arrived at the scene, officers saw the compact truck had struck a light pole before spinning back into the roadway.

A 22-year-old man was taken into custody for impaired driving.
The truck has been impounded for seven days and the driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days.

A few hours later, a 20-year-old Thunder Bay man was arrested for impaired driving following a high-speed crash on Red River Road at Waverley Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a pickup had extensive front-end damage after hitting a guardrail on Red River Road.

The driver was essentially unhurt, and only one of the three passengers in the vehicle reported a minor injury.

The truck was impounded for seven days and the driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days.

A news release from police noted that the two accidents occurred just prior to the launch of this year's holiday season RIDE programs.
