An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer based in Sioux Lookout, Ont., has been charged with assault as a result of an investigation by the province's police watchdog.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says its director, Joseph Martino, has reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in the northwestern Ontario town.

The incident in question occurred on Jan. 31, 2025, when the SIU says a 50-year-old man sustained a serious injury while being arrested.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The OPP officer is expected to appear in court in Sioux Lookout on July 29, the SIU says.

"As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation," the SIU said in its news release issued late Tuesday afternoon.
