Two separate fires at the Thunder Bay District Jail had to be extinguished by jail staff on New Year's Day.

Firefighters were dispatched to the jail at about 4:50 p.m. and were told jail staff found a small container with a small fire in the cells area. It was already extinguished when firefighters arrived.

Crews were still on scene when the fire alarm went off again, and another small fire in a small container was found in a different area of the cells. It was also extinguished by jail staff.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said its crews used fans to clear the jail of smoke.

After the area was safe for occupancy, fire crews turned the building back over to jail staff.
