1 sent to hospital with burns after fire erupts at TCH building in North York
Fire broke out at low-rise Toronto Community Housing building on Arleta Avenue
One man was injured and seven others suffered smoke inhalation after a fire erupted on the third floor of a Toronto Community Housing apartment block near Jane Street and Sheppard Avenue West.
The overnight two-alarm fire happened at 11 Arleta Ave., a low-rise building that's home to many seniors.
Toronto Fire Services district chief Michael Ancio said heavy smoke was coming from a unit on the third floor. When crews arrived, they found a man inside the apartment.
"The first two crews rescued that gentleman, brought him downstairs unconscious, revived him in the main lobby and he was passed over to EMS," Ancio said.
1 in hospital, 7 others treated for smoke inhalation
The man was sent to hospital with smoke inhalation and burns to his leg. Ancio said he was conscious and speaking.
Seven other people were treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire crews believe the fire started in the bedroom and are still investigating the cause alongside the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.
TTC buses were brought in as shelter for evacuees.
