About 6% of eligible Ontario voters cast an early ballot in snap election, data shows

Just over six per cent of eligible Ontario voters cast an early ballot in the snap provincial election, preliminary data shows. It's difficult to say what that could mean for turnout on Thursday.

Snap election meant advanced voting period condensed to 3 days

Just over six per cent of eligible Ontario voters cast an early ballot in the snap provincial election, preliminary data shows.

Elections Ontario said Monday that 678,789 — or roughly 6.14 per cent of the electorate — voted in the three-day advanced voting period.

The riding that saw highest advanced turnout was Parry Sound–Muskoka at 10.7 per cent. Progressive Conservative incumbent Graydon Smith is in a tight race there with six-time Green Party candidate Matt Richter.

Kiiwetinoong, the geographically expansive riding that covers the province's far northwest, saw the lowest advance turnout at 2.4 per cent. That's not necessarily surprising given the electoral district's population and that it's the dead of winter.

You can see the advance turnout in each of Ontario's 124 ridings at the bottom of this story.

It's basically impossible to draw any firm conclusions from the preliminary voting data. The early election call by PC Leader Doug Ford meant the advanced voting period was considerably condensed, as required by the province's electoral law.

In 2022, more than one million people, or about 9.92 per cent, cast an advanced ballot. But that was over a 10-day window.

In 2018, the advanced voting period was five days, and about 6.8 per cent of those eligible participated, according to Elections Ontario.

Very little about potential election day turnout can be gleaned from the preliminary advanced voting data. That said, final turnout in 2022 was among the lowest in Ontario's history, with only about 43 per cent of the electorate bothering to show up at the polls.

If you'd like to vote this time around but aren't sure how to do it, or who you'd like to support, this handy guide is tailored for you. Be sure to share it with anyone you know who might find it useful.

Below is the preliminary advance voting turnout for each riding in Ontario. The data was provided by Elections Ontario:
