Durham police say 25-year-old Nicholas Tyler Baig will now face a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his pregnant wife, Arianna Goberdhan.

Baig initially faced a second-degree murder charge, but after meeting with Crown attorneys, investigators have decided to upgrade the charge.

Goberdhan was nine months pregnant when she was found dead in a Pickering home earlier this month. Her unborn child did not survive, according to police.

Police say additional charges, including charges related to the death of the unborn child, could be added at a later date.

Baig will next appear in court on April 28.
