Man in his 20s killed in Rexdale shooting
At least one suspect was viewed fleeing the scene, said Toronto police
A man was shot and killed late Wednesday night in Rexdale, according to Toronto police.
Officers were called to the scene in the courtyard of group of apartment buildings on Bergamot Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. for reports of gunfire.
A neighbour heard a shot and ran to her window, which overlooks the common area. She refused to give her name, saying she was too afraid for her safety to do so.
The neighbour said she ran down to street level and found the victim on the ground between two buildings. She tried to speak to him, but he was unresponsive, she said. She immediately called police, and paramedics arrived a short time after.
The victim was rushed to a trauma centre, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was in his late 20s and is not believed to be a resident of the apartment complex.
"Witnesses indicated that they heard a gunshot, but they didn't see it," said Toronto police Insp. Stacey Davis of 23 Division.
The forensics unit was working in the area overnight.
Police are searching for at least two suspects and a green or tan "late model" SUV that was seen speeding away from the area after the gunfire. No suspect descriptions were available early Thursday.
Another neighbour, who would only say that her first name is Marie out of an abundance of caution, told CBC Toronto that she also heard a single gunshot. When it happened, she says she thought to herself, "not again."
