Man charged with 2nd-degree murder after woman fatally stabbed in Brampton home
Police say stabbing was a case of intimate partner violence

A man was charged with second-degree murder after a woman was fatally stabbed in a Brampton home Tuesday, in what police are calling a case of intimate partner violence.
Peel Regional Police received reports of a disturbance at a residence in a building near Kennedy Road S. and Glidden Road around 8:30 a.m., acting Sgt. Sarah Patten told reporters.
Officers found the woman stabbed and in life-threatening condition, Patten said. Paramedics rushed her to a trauma centre, where she later died.
A child, who called in the disturbance to police, was also in the home at the time of the stabbing, Patten said.
Police believe the woman was in her 40s but did not have further information about her identity, Patten said.
A man in his 30s was located not far from the residence and taken into custody, Patten said.
In an email Wednesday morning, a police spokesperson said the man is facing one count of second-degree murder and was held for a bail hearing.
"This is an intimate partner violence incident but homicide has taken charge of the investigation," they said. "The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and at this time, we do not have any further details to provide."
Peel's regional council formally declared intimate partner violence an epidemic in 2023 and called on the provincial government to do the same. Despite pressure from the opposition parties, including several motions at Queen's Park, Premier Doug Ford has thus far declined to do so.
CBC Toronto reported late last year that instances of intimate partner violence have continued to rise in Peel.
Neighbour says woman was bruised, bleeding
While police were stationed on the 12th floor of the building Tuesday, neighbouring residents told CBC Toronto they were shocked to see something so violent happen where they live.
"I saw when the lady was going in the ambulance. She was bruised up here," said Khalil Rehman, gesturing to part of his face. "She was bleeding too ... It's sad."

Neighbour Apscon Parks said he was equally concerned for the child.
"I don't know what age that person is, but for them, it's very [traumatic]," Parks said.
Investigators are asking anyone with any information about the incident to contact them.
