A woman is dead and a man is critically injured following a fire at a highrise residential building in Flemingdon Park on Wednesday, Toronto police say.

The fire broke out in a building on Grenoble Drive, near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue E. Toronto Fire Services said firefighters were called to a unit on the 21st floor at 3:35 p.m.

"Crews forced the door to the unit of origin, were met with complete blackness, zero visibility and high heat. They started their primary search immediately," Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop told reporters near the scene.

Crews removed the first victim and took that person to paramedics, then continued their search and found the second victim.

Both victims were taken to hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

According to paramedics, the woman was in her 30s while the man was in his 50s.

Jessop said the fire, which is now out, did not spread to other units. The unit was damaged, however.

Most residents of the building sheltered in place, he added. Residents of the 21st floor are not yet allowed back in, but may be allowed to return Wednesday night.

Toronto Fire Services said there is no sign that anyone else was injured or displaced by the fire.

Jessop said the investigation into the origin, cause and circumstances of the fire will begin Wednesday night. Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal will be notified.
