Man pleads guilty to fatally stabbing woman on subway train in 2022
Neng Jia Jin pleaded guilty to 1st-degree murder in death of Vanessa Kurpiewska
A man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder in a December 2022 attack on a TTC subway that left a 31-year-old woman dead and another woman injured in Toronto.
Neng Jia Jin pleaded guilty to both counts in Superior Court Monday at a pre-trial hearing, the Ministry of the Attorney General confirmed.
Vanessa Kurpiewska, 31, died on Dec. 8, 2022 after she was stabbed on a subway train near High Park station.
A 37-year-old woman was also injured in the attack, Toronto police said at the time.
Jin was arrested at the scene.
Police said the attack was random and Jin did not know the victims.
A sentencing hearing for Jin is scheduled to take place March 14.
The fatal attack was among a string of violent incidents on Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) property in 2022 and 2023, including a fatal attack on a 27-year-old woman in June 2022 where a man poured a liquid substance on her and ignited it.
Less than four months after Kurpiewska was killed, 16-year-old Gabriel Magalhaes was fatally stabbed at Keele Station in the city's west end in March 2023.
Jordan O'Brien-Tobin pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Magalhaes's death last November.
