Toronto expecting 2,600 privately-sponsored Syrian refugees, government map shows

Around 2,600 privately-sponsored Syrian refugees will be settling in Toronto, according to a map released by the Government of Canada.

Of the refugees who are coming to the GTA, the two largest groups are heading to Toronto. The city's downtown and mid-town will receive 1,326 refugees. Willowdale will host 1,079 refugees. 

Though decisions are not final, the government has released a map of destination communities which it says is "a representation of communities where private sponsors have put forth an application for a Syrian refugee."

The federal government's goal is to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of February, 2016.

Most of these will be government-assisted refugees but many others will be privately sponsored by organizations and groups of Canadians.

The government says as of Nov. 24, it is actively processing more than 4,500 files of privately-sponsored Syrian refugees outside of Quebec and 74 have already arrived in Canada since Nov. 4.
