Toronto police unveil new cruiser colour scheme, downplay visibility concerns

Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders says the new grey cars will remain visible despite the dark colour scheme.

Saunders said the cars 'are built to take the wear that police work demands'

New dark grey Toronto police cruisers have some Torontonians concerned about being able to see the difference between these updated squad cars and the unmarked stealth vehicles.

But Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders is downplaying these concerns, saying the new cars will remain visible despite the dark colour scheme.

Saunders reaffirmed on Twitter Tuesday that the dark grey police cruisers, which will phase out the older white and blue models, are not only functional but visible too.

Earlier this month, police announced that they were revamping their older white and blue scout cars.

Over the next four years, the white and blue police cruisers will get a stealthier upgrade, which Toronto police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said will "modernize every aspect of policing."

Saunders said the cars "are built to take the wear that police work demands."

While some are concerned about visibility, others are expressing their worry about the additional costs this transformation will have on the force's funding.

Gray said "the cars are being introduced under a life-cycle program" and "the service is not spending any additional funds to replace the white cruisers."
