Ontario to spend $14B building Canada's largest teaching hospital
Premier Ford says the Mississauga hospital will be the first-of-its-kind in Ontario

Ontario has announced more than $14 billion in new funding to build the largest teaching hospital in Canada.
The new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will triple the size and fully replace the existing Mississauga Hospital to help provide health care to an estimated 2.2 million people, the province says.
Premier Doug Ford attended the announcement Wednesday and said the new expansion will meet the needs of a "booming" region.
"We're thrilled to be supporting this project by investing. These are big numbers," Ford said.
"It'll be the first hospital of its kind right here in Ontario."
The new hospital, slated to open in 2033, will become the largest teaching hospital in Canada and create one of the biggest emergency departments in the province.
Minister of Health Sylvia Jones says the investment is an "exciting milestone."
"It is one more example of how our government is continuing to build on our progress, investing in the health care needs of Ontario's growing communities and ensuring more people in Mississauga, Peel Region and Etobicoke can connect to the highest standard of care for generations to come," she said at Wednesday's announcement.
Once open, the hospital will bring 2,400 more health-care workers and approximately 400 additional doctors to the community.
The hospital will also include a new 22-storey patient care tower with over 350 new fully private beds, bringing the total number of beds to over 950.
The new facilities will make it easier for people to "get the right care, at the right time, at the right place," said the president and CEO of Trillium Health Partners.
"These new facilities will be more than just places for treatment. They will be hubs for advanced connected care that reaches far beyond the hospital walls, and they'll be fully linked to the entire health-care system," said Karli Farrow at the announcement Wednesday.
Farrow says the new hospital will increase Trillium Health Partners' ability to provide more patients and families with services including cancer care, cardiac surgeries and geriatric mental health resources.
