Jurors shown video of 17-year-old Melonie's charred body, images of autopsy
Graphic crime-scene video and photos are being shown at the trial of a father charged in the death of his teenage daughter, whose charred body was found in a burning suitcase north of Toronto 21 years ago.
Everton Biddersingh has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 17-year-old daughter Melonie. He has pleaded not guilty.
Jurors have seen a video that shows Melonie's charred body as it was found by police -- in the fetal position, the metal frame of a suitcase visible around her.
They have also seen photographs of Melonie's frail body during an autopsy, which show some parts of skin on her limbs that haven't been burned entirely.
A police officer who took the photographs describes her body as "very slight, very thin."
A Crown prosecutor has said Melonie was starved and abused before her death.
Melonie's biological mother, Opal Austin, searched for her daughter for 17 years because Biddersingh told her she had run away. She has flown in from Jamaica, where she lives, and is expected to testify Thursday.
The case has taken two decades to get to trial because police weren't able to identify Melonie's remains for years until they received a tip that eventually led to the arrest of Everton Biddersingh and Melonie's stepmother, Elaine Biddersingh, in March 2012.
Elaine Biddersingh's trial is set to begin in April 2016. A confession she made to a pastor years after Melonie's death led to the break in the case.
