Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is under police protection after threats were made against him and his family, police say.

Peel Regional Police (PRP) assessed the threat and decided additional security was necessary while an investigation is underway, said Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich on Tuesday at a news conference for a different case.

"Really it was preventative and out of an abundance of caution," he said.

"At times people receive threats and we're concerned about them and we will do things to make sure we can mitigate any risk to them and their family."

At the same news conference, Mayor Patrick Brown said he had "great confidence in Peel police" and that this wasn't the first time he'd received a threat.

"I'm sure it won't be the last," said Brown. "I certainly want my family to be safe, and I believe they are, but it won't change my approach to be outspoken about public safety and to do my job accordingly."

Milinovich said the threats came from within Canada, but that police would wait to share more information so as not to jeopardize the investigation.
