Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Toronto Tuesday night, with the forecast calling for 30 to 50 millimetres starting Wednesday.

The federal weather agency warned that localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas.

In an updated special weather statement, it said a brief period of freezing rain is possible before a transition to rain on Wednesday.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy, slippery and hazardous," Environment Canada said.

However, temperatures will likely be above freezing in areas near Lake Ontario, it said.

Rain is expected to begin in southwestern Ontario Wednesday morning, before reaching the Golden Horseshoe some time in the afternoon.

More than 50 millimetres could fall in some areas, particularly over southwestern Ontario, the weather agency says. Thunderstorms are also expected.

The rain is expected to end west to east Wednesday night into early Thursday.
